The International Labor Organization estimates that 21 million women, men, and children are victims of human trafficking. These people are often forced to perform backbreaking labor or are sexually exploited. 71% of victims of human trafficking are women and girls. 33% are children of both sexes.
This scourge affects every country on the globe be it a land of origin for victims, a transit hub, or a destination. Therefore, in 2010, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. The global plan encourages UN member states to work together in order to combat human trafficking. This includes the establishment of a trust fund meant to provide on-the-ground aid to victims of trafficking.
The mission to incorporate this fight into the UN's broader agenda is ongoing. For example, in 2013 the General Assembly designated July 30th World Day against Trafficking in Persons. The resolution declared that such a day would help “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”
