RISE Artisan Marketplace
In 2016, Dr. Angie Vredeveld wrote a blog post for End Slavery Now about acid attacks in the African country of Uganda. In this article she reports that survivors of these attacks are at high risk of being trafficked due to the stigma they face. Ugandan acid attack survivors are more likely to be women, and their attackers are often current or former romantic partners.
RISE is a US-based nonprofit working to prevent these women from falling prey to modern-day enslavement. Through their Artisan Program, they purchase items directly from survivors in accordance with fair trade standards. Proceeds from these sales go directly to RISE and fund programming for acid attack survivors around the world.
