In May 2016, Polaris created an overview of human trafficking within the LGBTQ+ community
In this report, Polaris found that due to “significant challenges during adolescence and early adulthood, fighting discrimination, misconceptions, and abuse by peers, family members, and others in their communities,” LGBTQ+ youth who are homeless (up to 40% of the homeless youth population) are 7.4 times more likely to experience acts of sexual violence than their heterosexual peers and 3 to 7 times more likely to engage in “survival sex to meet basic needs such as shelter, food, drugs, or toiletries.”
