72% Of All Human Trafficking Victims And Survivors are Women
Anybody can fall prey to human traffickers. This includes men, boys, and nonbinary and transgender individuals. However, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime 72% of identified human trafficking victims are women and girls (2018).
Since women and girls account for more than half the world’s enslaved population, it is critical to understanding how and why human trafficking affects them. This includes both victims of sex and labor trafficking. For example, many enslaved women around the world are currently enduring domestic servitude.
In honor of Women’s History Month, locate and join an organization that specializes in fighting against modern day slavery for women and girls. Some of these include Rights4Girls, the Polaris Project, the International Justice Mission, and the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women. Learn about brave women standing up to modern-day enslavement like Celia Williamson, Kim Belew, T. Ortiz Pettigrew, and Barbara Amaya.
